Romania’s women marked its qualification for the Olympic Games with gold at the World Cup in Buenos Aires as France and Ukraine edged out Italy in the race for Rio. The Romanians beat Russia 45-40 in the team final, while Violetta Kolobova of Russia beat Estonia’s Irina Embrich 15-9 for individual gold.
In Vancouver Hungary’s men won team gold to claim Olympic qualification in dramatic fashion. The Hungarians produced a 42-36 win over Kazakhstan in the final, thereby denying their opponents a spot in Brazil. Enrico Garozzo of Italy beat Constantin Boehm of Germany 15-13 in the individual final.
Russia stormed to gold at the final Olympic qualification event for the women’s team sabre, beating France 45-33 in the final. The result locked down the No.1 spot in the world rankings for the Russians and passage to Rio. In the individual final in Belgium Olga Kharlan of Ukraine beat Russia’s Yana Egorian 15-13.
Two Koreans fought for the men’s individual gold in Warsaw with Bongil Gu taking out Junho Kim 15-13 in the final. It was Gu’s first podium result since his silver medal at the Asian Championships last year. USA edged out Russia 45-43 for gold in the team event.
