Having failed to qualify for the Olympics, Vezzali, arguably history’s greatest fencer, announced the world championships would be her last competition. But the Russians, anchored by world No. 2 Inna Deriglazova, spoiled the party, taking an early lead they never relinquished to win 45-39.
The Russian men then brought the test event to a close in spectacular fashion with a solid 45-38 defeat of Hungary to clinch the gold medal in team sabre. Leading from the start, Russia took control of the match as all three team members outperformed their opponents.
Reigning Olympic Champion and Hungarian anchor, Aron Szilagyi said: “The Olympic venue is wonderful and it’s lovely to fence here. I’m very proud of my team. We are very happy – of course a little disappointed right now but tomorrow morning we will just be happy.
