World No. 1 Arianna Errigo won the gold medal in the first women’s foil World Cup of the 2016-17 season in Cancun, Mexico, defeating compatriot Elisa Vardaro 15-6 in the final. Italy’s Martina Batini shared the bronze-medal position with Nicole Ross of the United States, while Italy also won the team competition.
Italy took team gold again in St. Maur, France, but the individual honours this time went to world No. 2 and Olympic champion Inna Deriglazova. Absent in Cancun, the Russian marked her return with a 15-8 final win over Ross. Errigo and Anastasia Ivanova took bronze, and Italy team gold.
The United States’ Race Imboden finished first at the first men’s foil World Cup event, the Pharaoh’s Challenge in Cairo, Egypt. The 23-year-old, part of the US bronze medal-winning team at the Rio Olympics, beat Italy’s Alessio Foconi 15-7 in the final. Foconi’s compatriots Andrea Cassara and Lorenzo Nista shared the bronze medal, with France earning the team gold.
Russia’s Nikita Glazkov claimed his first senior World Cup victory at the season-opening Bern World Cup in men’s individual epee. The 24-year-old left-hander was a 13-12 winner over Satoru Uyama. Ukraine’s Bogdan Nikishin and Andrea Santarelli of Italy were joint-third on the podium, while France won the team event.
